Despite several awards received from the aviation industry through the years (including the 5-STAR status recognized by Skytrax in 2009, 2012 and 2013), Malaysia Airlines has struggled in the 2000s to cope with the rise of the many low-cost carriers in the south-eastern Asia region, and in particular with Kuala Lumpur-based Air Asia (and its long-haul arm Air Asia X). The annus horribilis 2014, when the airline lost two aircraft (one most probably hijacked by the captain himself, the other shot down by a ground-to-air missile while over Ucraina enroute Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur) put at risk the survival of the airline, which lost huge amounts of traffic and had to cut severely fleet and network, including all destinations in North America and Europe (except for London) (Photo Wikimedia Commons / Hawkeye UK)
